General Construction was responsible for the civil, concrete, structural steel, electrical, piping, and mechanical aspects of the project. Our work scope also entailed fire protection, insulation, HVAC, and instrumentation activities. Kvaener supplied and erected the new boiler. General Electric supplied and erected the turbine-generator.
General Construction installed 1,500 lin ft of cable tray, five miles of CLX cable, a 15kV switchgear, and 2,300V & 480V substations while mill operations continued normally. As new equipment was brought on line, existing antiquated equipment and feeders were removed from service without interruption to production.
General Construction's task was to set and assemble the new switchgear and install the three new 15kV underground feeders from local utility metering to the new gear. From the new switchgear, eight new 15kV branch feeders had to be cut into the existing site distribution system. We then isolated and demolished the two existing primary feeders, reconfigured the 15kV taps to the building and connected the new system to the campus. General Construction was able to complete the shutdown work activities in five days, finishing the project ahead of schedule.
General Construction installed new equipment, relocated existing equipment and replaced electric drives and controls. The electrical and instrument work included 16 new variable frequency drives, a safety interlock system on machine guards, photoeyes and solenoid valves.
When originally installed in 1980, this tissue machine was driven by DC motors to precisely control the speed of rolls and dryers. This project replaced all 42 motors, ranging from 5 Hp to 500 Hp, with AC motors fed by variable frequency drives. General's work included modifying motor bases, installing new motors, installing new solid state drives, and installing cabling and controls. Careful planning along with maximizing pre-shutdown preparation allowed this critical machine to get back online with minimum downtime.
This project included installing a new 3,000 CFM air compressor with two new mist eliminator prefilters, installing a new refrigerated air dryer, and connecting the compressed air piping, cooling water piping, and circulating pumps. Also included were new electrical switchgear installation and power and control wiring.
